What's Up?

Wheelchair Curling has only been part of the Paralympics since 2006 in Torino, Italy. Just like Olympic Curling, two teams play against each other, taking turns pushing a 19.1 kilogram stone down a sheet of ice towards a series of concentric rings circles (rings inside rings). The object is to get the stones as close to the centre of the rings as possible.

In the Paralympics, this sport consists of a single tournament, and each team may be made up of both men and women. Athletes compete seated (in wheelchairs), may use an extender cue to push the stone along the ice and must throw the stone when the wheelchair is stationary. Another important difference is that in Wheelchair Curling no ‘sweeping’ takes place, so there is no chance to redirect a stone once it has been thrown.

Nightmare in Nagano
by Roy MacGregor
The Screech Owls journey to Nagano, Japan to take part in a tournament. The trip starts off as an exciting one when the team finds out they will be playing in Big Hat, the 1998 Winter Olympics arena. However, it turns into a nightmare when a shadow falls over the tournament and bad luck seems to follow the Owls wherever they go. Grades 4-7.
